AHMET ERTEGUN DIES, 6 MONTHS AFTER MARDIN

The founder of Atlantic Records, Turkish born Ahmet Ertegun has died in June 2007, aged 83. He had been in a coma since October, when he had a fall at a Rolling Stones concert. He has been laid to rest in Turkey.

"The soul of Ahmet Ertegun will forever be our guiding spirit, and as long as there is an Atlantic Records, it will be Ahmet Ertegun's company," said Craig Kallman, the chairman and Chief executive of the Warner Music Group Corp. unit.

Only 6 months ago Arif Mardin, legendary Atlantic producer also died.

Arif Mardin, who was 74, died on Sunday June 25 2007 in New York of pancreatic cancer. He was laid to rest in Istanbul on July 5th.

He made his name with Atlantic Records with his work with Aretha Franklin. He was with the label from 1963 to 2001 before leaving to set up his own label at EMI where he developed the talents of Norah Jones, giving him a surprise “second” career in recent years, producing Norah Jones’ Grammy-winning hits like “Don’t Know Why.”

His career started in 1956 when he met jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in Turkey who inspired him to take up a scholarship in the USA.

In 1967, he arranged Aretha Franklin’s ‘I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You’ album as well as her soul classic ‘Respect’.

What followed in the 60’s was work with The Rascals, Laura Nyro, and Dusty's Memphis sessions. In the 70’s he worked with Hall & Oates, Bette Midler and Roberta Flack. His greatest commercial success was with the Bee Gees.

March 3 2006 Dusty has made No.8 Greatest Gays in History in a Poll for GaydarRadio. The full list is as follows:

 1. Ellen DeGeneres
2. Leonardo da Vinci
3. Oscar Wilde
4. Alexander the Great
5. Sappho
6. Virginia Woolf
7. Alan Turing
8. Dusty Springfield
9. Billie Jean King
10. Michelangelo

updated Feb 7 2006 Way back in 2001 we reported that there was to be a Walk of Fame in Brighton, and that Dusty would be one of the first artistes honoured. Today it is reported that Brighton & Hove Council are being asked to consider a Pink Plaque scheme for people with both Gay & Brighton connections - a kind of Pink Heritage Trail!

I must say that the Dusty link is tenuous at best; she visited her parent's home in Hove according to the BBC News site.

Shelby Lynne is paying tribute to one of her musical heroes, Dusty Springfield, with a full-length CD, Just a Little Lovin', released Feb. 5 on Lost Highway Records to great critical acclaim. Selections include "The Look of Love," "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and "I Only Want to Be With You," along with a song Lynne wrote, "Pretend."

PETULA CLARK HAS SPOKEN TO THE LAS VEGAS SUN ABOUT HER DUET WITH DUSTY. Petula tells The Sun " I recorded the duet with Dusty a year ago. We used a tape that she had recorded but it was unfinished. Through the magic of technology I had the opportunity to go in and sing with her." Read the interview in full

Dusty didn't complete her recording of "Corner Of The Sky" (from the musical PIPPIN), but Petula has added her vocal to the track & it will be released on an album of duets in 2007. Dusty's vocal is from July 1974. Other duets on Pet's album are with Anthony Newley, Sacha Distel, Peggy Lee, Oscar Peterson, Matt Monro, & Dean Martin.

Eagle Rock have released the legendary 1979 concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Already available in the UK & the States, February 5th sees the concert available in Australia. The audio CD of the concert has also now been released and is just wonderful. It's a real tragedy that the whole concert could not have been seen on DVD, as the sound recording, particularly of Baby Blue, is fantastic. The sound for me is better on the CD, as the Dolby 5.1 mix on the DVD blurs some of the vocals. Other extra tracks on the CD are Hollywood Movie Girls & A Brand New Me (edited from the hits medley).

Mike Mansfield, who directed the show ,has had it remastered digitally with a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. The DVD features interviews withh Madeline Bell, Vicki Wickham, Pat Rhodes and myself .

Some truly great musicians took part in the concert, among them Alan Parker & Herbie Flowers from Blue Mink; singers with me on the show were the late Vicki Brown, and Lavinia Rogers, sister of Clodagh (a big UK singer in the 60s).

The original show was in aid of a children's charity, and was attended by H.R.H The Princess Margaret, and John Miles was the support act.

Among the thousands in the audience was a very young Annie Lennox, who had just had a hit with "I Only Want To Be With You" as part of The Tourists.

The concert has never actually been broadcast; the only copies available being bootlegs.

updated April 26 2006 The 8 part documentary series "Dusty - Little By Little" has completed on ABC TV Australia, showing at 8:00p.m. each Tuesday from March 7. In addition to background on the making of the Dusty - The Original Pop Diva musical , friends and colleagues of Dusty , including Pat Rhodes & Simon Bell were interviewed .

In the show, Tasmin Carroll stars as Dusty. A video preview can be seen by clicking the link to the Dusty- The Musical homepage

In a poll, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Ovor Novello Awards, the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters has voted Dusty's debut single - "I Only Want To Be With You" - into the top five songs of the decade from 1955 - 1965. The winning song was "You Really Got Me" by The Kinks. Full results can be seen here: THE IVORS

"I Only Want To Be With You" was written for Dusty by Mike Hawker & Ivor Raymonde, who had previously penned "Walking Back To Happiness" for Helen Shapiro. Their other compositions for Dusty included "Stay Awhile" & "I Wish I'd Never Loved You", which Helen Shapiro covered.

Mike Hawker was married to Jean Ryder (of The Breakaways, now Jean Westwood). The Breakaways sang background on all of the Hawker/Raymonde songs recorded by Dusty. Breakaway Vicki Brown, later sand background for Dusty at the legendary Royal Albert Hall concert.

BBC Radio 2 has had a poll to find the greatest voices of the 20th Century. SEE THE RESULTS Radio 2 repeated the "Girl Called Dusty" tribute on July 3, 2001. It had previously been broadcast in April 1999.
Dusty has been voted No. 17 on a list notably filled with the greatest voices in musical history. Frank Sinatra tops the poll, followed by Elvis & Nat King Cole. No other British female is in the Top 40, and those women ahead of her are: Ella, Aretha, Billie Holiday, & Barbra Sreisand, so she's in truly great company! Dusty's own heroine Peggy Lee is No.25, and Judy is No. 23. The producer of the project is Kevin Howlett, who produced the "Remembering Dusty Springfield" series.

UPDATED.
MAMA I WANT TO SING, the musical based on the life of Doris Troy is to be made into a movie starring Patti LaBelle. Charles Randolph-Wright will direct a film adaptation of the musical Mama, I Want to Sing! that is set to star Ciara, Patti LaBelle and Lynn Whitfield, according to Variety.
CodeBlack Entertainment will produce the the feature adaptation of the Off-Broadway gospel musical that is slated to begin filming in June for a February 2008 release through FoxFaith.
Randolph-Wright directs his own screenplay for the film based on the stage musical by Vy Higginsen and Ken Wydro. Mama, I Want to Sing! centers on a preacher's daughter (Ciara) who makes the leap from church choir singer to pop star. The story is based on the life of Higginsen's sister Doris Troy, the singer known for the 1963 hit "Just One Look." It played in New York in 1983 at the Heckscher Theatre and London in 1995. (Chaka Khan appeared in the latter staging.) The writers also penned two follow-ups to the original stage show, Sing! Mama 2 and Born to Sing, Mama 3.
Young R&B soul songstress Ciara is known for her singles "One, Two Step," "Goodies," "Promise" and "Like a Boy." She earned a Grammy Award for her work on the Missy Elliott song "Lose Control." She made her acting debut in MTV Films' "All You've Got."
LaBelle — who played Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago for an exclusive Los Angeles engagement — is known for her Grammy Award-winning rhythm and blues songs, which include "On My Own" and "New Attitude." The one-time lead member of the group Labelle also sang on the group's biggest hit "Lady Marmalade." She has appeared on Broadway in three self-titled concerts and in the 1982 revival of Your Arms Too Short to Box With God.
Whitfield is known for her work in film and television in "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate," "Eve's Bayou" and her Emmy Award-winning turn in "The Josephine Baker Story." Her stage credits include Off-Broadway's White Chocolate and the national tours of The Great MacDaddy Musical and For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.
Randolph-Wright penned the play Blue, which played Off-Broadway (starring Phylicia Rashad). He recently directed Cuttin' Up (at Pasadena Playhouse), Brian Stokes Mitchell in the solo show Love/Life (Lincoln Center) and the world premieres of Oni Faida Lampley Tough Titty (Williamstown Theatre Festival) and Senor Discretion Himself (Arena Stage).

The Canadian Press has revealed that Carole Pope's biography, Anti Diva, has been optioned and could be turned into a movie. see the full story

 Feb 23, 2006

The draft script of the forthcoming British TV movie based on Dusty's life is almost complete. Writer, Sue Oudot has worked for some time on the project and tells me "My feeling is that viewers will come out of it thinking what a great talent Dusty was, what an awful personal struggle she had". Dusty will be played by former "Eastenders" actress Michelle Collins.

This project is still ON, more news soon
