Dusty Day 2010 was bathed in the sun on the warmest day of the year. Somebody up there seems to like us!
despite the loss of Madeline Bell & Douggie Reece, due to flying restrictions, everyone present pulled out the stops and made it one of the most memorable days ever.
Julie Felix kicked off the day in her unique style, creating a festival atmosphere. Julie was folllowed by Katy Setterfield who sand a medley of I Only Want To Be With You/Stay Awhile/Just a Little Lovin’/Some Of your Loving. She then gave us All I See Is You and Little By Little, before performing Dusty’s biggest hit You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.
Then we had 5 former members of The Echoes, who entertained us with tales of plate smashing and gave us first hand accounts of the infamous visit to South Africa in 1964.
Thanks to Mick Garrett, Ivan Chandler, Pete Wolf, Bobby Wackett & Johnny Dryden. Douggie missed such a great day.
Following the auction, ably conducted by Stewart Lilly, I introduced legendary jazz singers Ian Shaw & Liane Carroll, who mesmerised us with, among others, I’m Coming Home Again, A House Is Not A Home,How Can I Be Sure, My Colouring Book & You’ve Got A Friend. I don’t remember the last time I heard such talent.
In my own spot I sang I am You Child, Long After Tonight Is All Over, Chained To A Memory, I Wish I’d Never Loved You and I’ll try Anything.
In an unrehearsed moment, Lianne Carroll, Ian Shaw & myself (Simon Bell) paid tribute to the late Lesley Duncan by singing her Love Song.
We managed (just) to hear Madeline Bell singing Going Back by telephone from her home in Spain. We know Mad will do everything possible to be there next time.
Throughout the performances Jonathan Cohen accompanied as only he can, and I’m so glad he was able to be there.
