One of Motown’s greatest producer/songwriters, Norman Whitfield, has died at 67.
Whitfield was a giant, up there with Holland/Dozier/Holland, and responsible for I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Aint To Proud To Beg, War, Papa Was A Rolling Stone, Cloud Nine, Too Many Fish In The Sea, and He Was Really Saying Something. He wrote Needle In A Haystack & Aint No Sun Since You’ve Been Gone, both covered by Dusty.
New Yorker Whitfield left Motown in 1973 and wrote & produced the Rose Royce hits Car Wash & Love Don’t Live Here Any More.
